Describing Little Amal

JJ in a headset mic, beaming, with a huge puppet girl walking behind him.

This summer I spent several gleeful days following a 12-foot-tall puppet through the streets of Toronto, describing her every move over the radio. I really do love my job!

Little Amal, the extraordinary puppet, is a young refugee from Syria, who has been travelling the world in search of her parents. This June, the Luminato Festival hosted her journey through Toronto, and arranged for her to meet with community groups, school kids, Elders, and even local puppets!

Everywhere she went, Amal drew a crowd. And I got to tag along, describing her actions, gestures, and interactions to sighted, Blind, and Low Vision listeners tuning in on Radio Lumi.

Yes, it was as fun as it sounds!
